A proven leader, Carmello serves as Class President, representing his peers and helping coordinate school events. He is also a peer tutor, mentor, and active participant in Teen Court, where he practices leadership through advocacy and accountability. As a track team member, he demonstrates discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
Carmello’s passion for creativity and innovation is evident through his work in photography and media. He is currently pursuing his FAA Part 107 drone license to expand his skills in aerial videography and creative production.
Deeply engaged in his community, Carmello serves on the NC Child Youth Advisory Council, where he helps shape youth policy across the state. His advocacy work earned him recognition in NC Health News, and he has also collaborated with a local faith leader to connect mental health and Christianity. In addition, Carmello independently drafted legislation presented to North Carolina State Representatives and published an article on intergenerational trauma, contributing to meaningful dialogue on healing and resilience.
At just 15 years old, Carmello exemplifies integrity, leadership, and purpose. Through academics, service, and creativity, he continues to inspire others while building a future focused on excellence and impact. This dedication to scholarship, leadership, and community service is why Carmello Gilliam has been named the recipient of the Next Gen Rising Award.
