Pitt Co. teacher and guest of the "ELLEN" Show, reaches out to special Bertie BT

Bertie BT Coordinator Karen Dameron presents Michael Bonner's autographed book to Crystal Taylor

Michael Bonner, the teacher from Pitt County, featured on “The Ellen Degeneres Show,” recently agreed to donate $500 to a Beginning Teacher’s classroom of Bertie County Schools.

Bertie County Schools’ Beginning Teacher Coordinator, Karen Dameron and national teaching sensation, Mr. Bonner met this month at the NCPAPA Fall Instructional Symposium 2018 in Pinehurst, NC.

There, Bonner was one of three featured speakers, along with Eric Jensen and Tara Brown.

When Ms. Dameron approached Mr. Bonner after the event for a book signing, she told him that she works with beginning teachers in Bertie County. Bonner personally autographed two of his books, which Dameron purchased—one for herself, and one for another lucky, Bertie County BT.

Inside the BT’s book, he wrote:

Hey! If you message me on Instagram I will donate $500 to your classroom!

P.S. You have 24 hours to reply!”

Ms. Dameron selected at random, a BT in a drawing from among all of the Bertie County Schools’ beginning teachers.

And it was Ms. Crystal Taylor selected, a second-year BT and third grade teacher at Aulander Elementary School, who would receive the book and donation! Congratulations, Ms. Taylor!

Ms. Dameron contacted her immediately by email and text and told her what she needed to do to claim her special gift. Ms. Taylor did so immediately.

Recently, Ms. Dameron went to Aulander Elementary School and presented the autographed book to Ms. Taylor. Taylor said when she communicated with Mr. Bonner, she excitedly thanked him for his donation to her classroom. Taylor had submitted a special project to for funding. Bonner’s donation sent her request over the top for what was needed for her project, called “Prints” Charming.

“Prints” Charming is a project that would allow for the purchase of a color, 3-D printer for her classroom!

Ms. Taylor and Principal Clara Lee have been monitoring the UPS deliveries daily, waiting for the printer to arrive.

Ms. Taylor also said that she had other donors to contribute as well, and the monies left over would be placed on a gift card for her future projects. “And this book was right on time, too,” said Taylor. “I was feeling a little weary,” she added with a great big smile and a wink!

Dameron added, “Michael Bonner’s book is very inspiring and motivating.”
