Parent’s Bill of Rights
In accordance with the North Carolina Parents’ Bill of Rights and district health protocols, Bertie County Schools conducts routine health screenings for students during the school year.
These screenings are designed to identify potential health barriers to learning. The following routine assessments may be provided to your child:
- Vision Screening: To check for distance and near-vision clarity.
- Hearing Screening: To identify potential hearing loss that may affect classroom performance.
- Dental Screening: To identify visible dental concerns or the need for professional care.
Opt-Out Procedure
While these screenings are recommended to support your child’s academic success, you have the right to withhold consent. Under current state law, if you do not wish for your child to participate in these routine screenings, you must notify the school nurse in writing.
To opt out, please send a written letter or email to your child’s school nurse within 30 days of the first day of school. Your request should include:
- Your child’s full name
- Their current grade and teacher
- The specific screening(s) you wish to opt out of (e.g., "Opt out of all," or "Opt out of Dental only")
-
Results and Follow-Up
If your child participates in these screenings, you will be notified if a screening indicates a potential concern. You will be referred to your family physician or specialist for further evaluation.
For more information regarding your rights as a parent, please review the Bertie County Schools Board Policies regarding student health and parental involvement.
If you have any questions, please contact your school’s main office to speak with the school nurse.
