Pre-K Screening and Placement Process

Pre-K Screening and Placement Process

Parents/guardians who complete the NC Pre-K Application will receive an email or phone call with instructions on the next steps of the application process. The application process starts in the Spring during the school district Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration Event.  This event goes to all four of the school district's elementary schools for 2-3 days of enrollment opportunity for children entering pre-k and kindergarten in the fall. Keep in mind, that once your application is received and reviewed, determination of enrollment and site selection will not be completed until the summer. You may experience a longer wait time if your application is initially turned in incomplete/missing required documents.

You may check your application status 6-8 weeks after applying if you have not received an email or phone call. If you have not turned in all required documents, your child's application has not been fully processed.

Your child will be evaluated for school readiness using the Brigance Early Childhood Screen III (3-5 years). The assessment is a series of activities that create a picture of your child's language, cognitive, and motor development based on age. You may supply additional information that will be helpful in considering the placement of your child.

To determine if your child is eligible for the BCS NC Pre-K Program for the upcoming school year, parents/guardians must complete the Pre-K screening process that is provided in the application packet.

Placement priority is based on the demonstrated need to develop school readiness foundational skills. Parents/guardians of children screened will receive an email or phone call during the summer to notify you of the status of your child's application.
